Working together using this wiki

Think of this wiki as a shared online whiteboard. Each of us has the opportunity to contribute to this collection of information and links. I know absolutely NOTHING about web page design and development, so this will be a learning experience for all us. If you wish to contribute to the Wiki, you will need the site password. You can get that by sending an e-mail to Joe Zachary, Will Hill or me, Ed Richards, requesting it. Links are shown below.

Announcements will go here

Greetings all!! The club mail list server is still down, but we will be having a SIG workshop Monday evening, November 2nd at 6 pm in the Linux Lab. Many of you have asked about installing Linux on a USB thumb drive or hard drive. In this workshop, I will show you some really easy ways to accomplish this. This whole Linux thing just keeps getting easier and easier. If you want to do an install yourself, bring your USB device and an ISO of your favorite Linux or BSD distribution. Now remember, this is exactly OPPOSITE of what you would normally do. In this instance, download the ISO and write the file to a CD as a data disk and bring it with you. We will also investigate doing an install DIRECTLY from the InterNet and not having to directly download ANYTHING.

Finally, Ubuntu 8.10 has been released and it looks awesome. I did the update overnite last evening and, so far, it seems to have gone flawlessly!!! A couple of clicks this morning, a reboot and everything seems to just work. There are a lot of new and very exciting features in the new version. We will look at some of them during the workshop.

I look forward to seeing everyone Monday evening,

 Ed

Opera 9 is available for Linux and Windows.

You can download it by clicking

here.

For Xandros, it only lists up through version 3, but I have installed it on X4 and it works fine. Just download the file to your desktop, double click on it and let Xandros Networks install it. This Linux stuff is hard. ;)

As a few of you knew, I was having trouble loading Xandros 4 on my new Dell laptop. I has a SATA drive and Xandros Install could not find it. I emailed Xandros Technical Support and they sent me a ticket number. I sent my first message at 4:31 PM, the first response was at 4:36 PM with the ticket number. The first support response was at 6:12 PM. Since I was at the Linux SIG meeting, I did not respond until 8:39 PM. The next day I got a response at 11:24 AM. The next response from Mike LeBlanc (sounds like a Louisiana name) asked me to try a fix: "As promised I might have a solution for you. Insert your CD and reboot. Press the spacebar to enter the Troubleshooting Options, highlight Default Setup and press tab. Add the line: acpi=force irqpoll At the end of the command line then press enter and let me know if that works." It worked! In less than one day, the Xandros support solved the problem. I am up and running. Larry
