Tips & Tricks
Ctrl+Alt+Esc is the Linux equivalent of the Windows three finger salute. Executing those key strokes will change the cursor to a scull 'n' crossbones. Moving the cursor over a program and clicking on the program will, with extreme predjudice, terminate the program. This is great for getting ride of a program that has hung up. Note that, unlike in Windows, it does not terminate the operating system, just the offending program. Exercise care when using this tip as clicking the scull 'n' crossbones on the kicker panel or the desktop will kill them and you will need to restart the desktop. See next tip.
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will terminate the desktop (GUI) and take you to the login screen where you can log back in. Ctrl+Alt+F7 will restore the desktop (GUI).
Ctrl+Alt+Delete will bring up the task or process manager which will allow you to monitor or kill any process (program) that you own, much as you can do in Windows.
Ctrl+Alt+Function will switch to a virtual terminal where you may login and issue console commands. Function keys F2 through F6 are the available terminals by default. For a list of useable commands see Linux Console Commands
If you loose the Windows XP entry in the LILO menu, open an administrative console and run /sbin/lilo and it will rebuild the menu and add Windows XP back to the boot menu.
If after having installed Xandros, Windows XP won't boot and reports that it can't start autochk, boot into Xandros, install QTParted, open QTParted, highlight the Windows NTFS partition, right click on it and uncheck hidden. That should fix the problem.
